The most spectacular Broadway shows are hitting the road beginning this 2019!

From Jesus Christ Superstar to the more family friendly ones like Frozen and The Spongebob Musical, it is an especially good year for theater fans who are waiting to catch their favorite shows without having to fly or drive all the way up to the Big Apple.

Bandstand

Two years after its Broadway debut, the Tony Award-winning Bandstand musical by Richard Oberacker and Robert Taylor is going on a year-long national tour! The production got mixed reviews from critics, but the choreography of renowned director Andy Blankenbuehler received nothing but praises. A poignant and inspiring musical that explodes with infectious music and heart-stopping dancing, this show will let you delve into the deeper issues that plagued the veterans who came home after World War II.

Synopsis: “It’s 1945. As America’s soldiers come home to ticker-tape parades and overjoyed families, Private First Class Donny Novitski, singer, and songwriter, struggles to rebuild the life he left behind. When NBC announces a national competition to find the nation’s next great musical superstars, Donny sees a lifeline for himself and some fellow veterans that gives them the purpose they so desperately need. Together, they form a band unlike any the nation has ever seen. Along the way, they discover the power of music to face the impossible, find their voice, and finally, feel like they have a place to call home.”

The Color Purple

With a soulful, Grammy-winning score of jazz, gospel, ragtime and blues, The Color Purple gives an exciting new spirit to this Pulitzer Prize-winning story by American author Alice Walker. This production is a stunning re-imagining of a story about a young woman’s journey to love and triumph in the American South.

Synopsis: “An epic tale spanning forty years in the life of Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), an African-American woman living in the South who survives incredible abuse and bigotry. After Celie’s abusive father marries her off to the equally debasing “Mister” Albert Johnson (Danny Glover), things go from bad to worse, leaving Celie to find companionship anywhere she can. She perseveres, holding on to her dream of one day being reunited with her sister in Africa. Based on the novel by Alice Walker.”

Frozen The Musical

Pretty sure you’ve watched the heart-melting story of Anna and Elsa multiple times on the big screen or on TV, but have you ever seen them come to life on stage? Take your Frozen experience to the next level and see the musical in a city near you! The show features songs that probably got stuck in your head for a pretty long time from the original film, plus an expanded score with a dozen new numbers. A truly magical theatrical experience filled with sensational sets and awesome performance, Frozen is everything you want in a musical and more.

Jesus Christ Superstar

A decade after the last major tour, Jesus Christ Superstar is hitting the theaters of North America once again. Led by acclaimed director Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie, this musical phenomenon offers cutting-edge performances that speak to both theater audiences and concert music fans. This award-winning Regent’s Park production is set to play in over 50 markets throughout the United States.

Synopsis: “Jesus Christ Superstar is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary score includes ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’, ‘Gethsemane’, ‘Heaven on their Minds’ and ‘Superstar’.”

Mean Girls on Broadway

Perhaps one of the most awaited musicals on Broadway is finally hitting the road! Mean Girls features a book by nine-time Emmy Award winner Tina Fey, based on her screenplay for the 2004 film of the same name. Music is helmed by three-time Emmy Award winner Jeff Richmond, lyrics by two-time Tony Award nominee Nell Benjamin, while the choreography is by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw. With a talented cast and creatives, it is no wonder that the stage adaptation of the 2004 comedy earned 12 Tony Award nominations this year in 2018.

Synopsis: “Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George.
