Headliners: Erykah Badu, Miguel, Tyler, The Creator
Brooklyn Afropunk is an annual arts festival that thrives in bringing the cultural relevance of Afropunk music during a weekend full of music, film, art, and skate. Afropunk’s original purpose was to provide the black community a space to express their love for the then-predominantly white punk subculture. However, in the recent years, Afropunk has developed itself into a more diverse cultural showcase. Now, it has become a haven for social activists, artists, writers, musicians, and feminists to come together for a weekend of good vibes and even greater music. In fact, the music festival has become so popular that they’ve expanded to international locations including Paris, London, and Johannesburg.
This year, Afropunk’s theme is The People Resist, that wants to “bring together AFROPUNK ideology and the people who support it, in resistance to those that strive to oppress.” Headlining this year’s edition are Janelle Monae, Erykah Badu, and Tyler The Creator. The stellar lineup also includes popular acts like H.E.R., Miguel, Daniel Caesar and Jaden and Willow Smith.
